(Atlanta)- A White County school is among 22 schools that The Georgia Department of Public Health and the Governor’s SHAPE Initiative have awarded grants totaling $112-thousand dollars.
Research has shown that children are much more physically active if they attend schools that schedule, promote and supervise opportunities such as structured recess, short classroom-based activity breaks and before and after-school activities. Georgia currently ranks tenth in the nation for overweight and obese children.”
Mt. Yonah Elementary School is one of seventeen school receiving an Enhanced Core grant of $5,000. Also Walka Mountain Multiple Intelligences Academy in Gainesville received a Enhanced grant.
Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Health said. “These grants will go a long way toward improving childhood fitness and nutrition.
