Asbestos Road at Mauldin Road where improvements will take place

(Cleveland)- The White County Board of Commissioners have taken steps to make improvements  to a dangerous section of Asbestos Road north of Cleveland.  The commissioners Monday approved widening the inside curve, at the intersection of Mauldin Road and eastside of Asbestos Road.

That curve has been described as the most dangerous part of the road because of a sharp curve,  narrow road and some sight issues.  That section of the road has been the location  for several accidents including a fatal accident in 2011 that killed a Hiawassee man.

The commissioners  back in August  approved funding to pave the section of Asbestos Road from Joe Black Road to Alternate Highway 75 intersection and they felt this was the best time to make the improvement.

Public Works Director Terry Palmer said, they will wait until at least April because they need warmer weather to do the paving. According to Palmer they will add  two feet to the road way on the inside curve and then move the centerline over  to give an extra foot for each driver to maneuver the curve.

The commissioners approved the use of $7,000 in SPLOST  tax fund to do the widening work.
