Grady Alton Stephens, 87, of Murrayville, Georgia, passed peacefully at his daughter’s home, on January 24th,
2016.
A celebration of life service will be held at 3:00PM, Friday, January 29th at St Paul the Apostle Catholic
Church at 1243 Hulsey Road, Cleveland, GA. There will be a gathering of family and friends afterwards at a
location to be announced.
Grady was born February 9, 1928 in El Dorado, Arkansas to Alvie and Mary Stephens. He grew up along the
coast of Texas in the constant company of his four brothers and sister. He was an Eagle Scout and served in the
Navy during the Korean War. On April 18th, 1953 he married the former Wanda Simeon in Anaheim,
California. Grady worked in the construction trade for over 50 years. He started building cabinets in California
after he was discharged from the Navy. He moved into structural construction when he returned to Houston,
Texas ultimately becoming a construction superintendent. Late in life, Grady and Wanda moved to the North
Georgia Mountains to build their retirement home. He continued to work as a master carpenter with his dear
friend Richard Jones until he turned 76.
He was a Boy Scoutmaster and stayed active in church activities throughout his life. He was especially fond of
volunteering at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church food bank. He enjoyed canoeing, camping, fishing,
playing cards and dominos; but mostly he relished spending time with family and friends.
He was preceded, in death by wife, Wanda, and daughter, Linda Brockman.
He is survived by his children and their spouses: Donald and Stephanie Stephens, Wandajean and Jonathan
Jones and Joseph and Alisha Stephens; Grandchildren and their spouses, Aimee and Gary Scogin, Michael and
Robin Stephens, Jonathan David Jones, Sara Stephens, Grady and Crystal Brockman, and Alexander Brockman;
Great grandchildren, Grant and Grayson Scogin, and Alexander Stephens along with many other family &
friends.
