(Cleveland)- The City of Cleveland Council Monday night recognized a city police officer and two firefighters who responded to two separate overdose incidents earlier this year and after administering the drug Narcan are credited in saving the victims life.
Narcan is a drug that is used to reverse an opioid overdose.
Cleveland police officer Raymond Rutledge responded to a call just outside the city limits of Cleveland at the intersection of Town Creek Road and Highway 115.
Fire Lieutenant Mark Gunter, and Fireman Martin Godfrey responded to a separate call that involved an overdose in which the victim was administered Narcan, that occurred on Labor Day north of Cleveland
According to Cleveland Police Chief John Foster, the victim west of Cleveland, was unconscious and near death before the drug was administered. After the drug was given the victim actually stood up and moved to a medical service gurney and then placed in an ambulance where he was transported to the hospital.
Officer Rutledge said after the meeting that the training they received just kicked in when he arrived on scene.

On “victim #2”, what about the woman who performed CPR after his heart stopped and he wasn’t breathing. If she had not been up-to-date on current CPR procedures for opioid overdose, he would not have survived.
